Designer Liang Yuzhen
Interior designers help transform spaces based on people’s needs. Facing the same space, different interior designers may have vastly different understandings. But what has not changed is that all designers strive to meet the space user’s needs with different methods. Here’s the story of designer Liang Yuzhen.
Q: Could you please tell us about yourself as an interior designer?
A: Well, I’m an interior designer, but I would prefer to call myself a “life inventor”.
A space exists long before there are interior designers, more often than not, the space doesn’t meet people’s needs, so designers are called in to help transform the space. An Interior designer will come up with a design plan. When the design is landed, the gap between the space and people is mended. It’s interior designers that help invent a new life.

Q: What motivated you to become an interior designer?
A: I like to experience life. I recall a journey to Xinjiang. I saw a city surrounded by the desert. I was shocked by the vastness of the scene. I then think humans are so small compared to everything else. I think that I would like to leave some kind of traces of myself in this world.
Interior design, the profession that I choose, leaves traces in both physical environments and human memories. To be an interior designer is to leave one’s mark on the world. That trip to Xinjiang made me love my profession even more.
Q: In learning to become a professional designer, are there any interesting stories?
A: I remember when I first started doing this, my Shifu (teacher) let me live and work with a construction team for quite some time. He did all this to help me master different construction methods, which would turn out to be hugely helpful for me to land any design.
During the day, I would be an assistant for the construction team, working side by side with them. At night, I would learn interior design knowledge and how to draw until early hours of the morning. Now I recall that time, it wasn’t easy at all but it was the most fulfilling.

Q: What is your design philosophy?
A: Any design should be people-oriented. I have seen a lot of unreasonable designs that didn’t consider the fact that someone is going to use this space. Some call design arts, while some say you can make money with design. I always believe design comes from life but is larger than life.
Q: Is there a design project in your career that particularly stands out?
A: I once designed a cafe project. In order to understand the project better, I went to learn a lot about coffee. I fell in love with pour-over coffee afterwards.
Q: What is your first impression of the BuildMost platform?
A: I appreciate what BuildMost is doing. It inspires designers to be creative with its abundant design materials on the platform. But the most important thing is that it builds a bridge between project owners and designers. BuildMost empowers both of them to connect and communicate easily. I think BuildMost is a platform that truly considers for both project owners and designers while meeting both of their needs.

Q: Can you share a representative design case of yours?
A: There is one actually: the Star Tuyuan Design Maker Office project. I uploaded this design work to BuildMost. This project is located in Huangpu, Guangzhou. It is the office of a financial and medical institution. This project meant a lot to me as an interior designer. I might call this office the project of my career.
This company advocates concepts of health, technology, and digitization. The area to be designed is vast, which includes office areas, meeting rooms, multi-functional halls, a pantry area, and outdoor terraces. It’s the whole deal.

I choose more modern design elements for this project. Architecture massing helped me break the monotony of this space. Even though the area is super large, the style of the office space is simple yet refined.

Q: How is your experience with this project?
A: Projects of dozens of square meters are so different from projects of a few hundred square meters. Designers will have to adjust themselves to adapt to projects of different scales. When you are dealing with a project of a thousand square meters. It’s no doubt a challenge for designers.
It’s just like hiking. When you are in the 999 step, you are only one step away from reaching the top of the mountain. You are actually exhausted. Leaving things the way they are and giving up seem like an okay option for you. But deep in your heart you know you can’t give up at this point. When you take the final step, you will get to see a completely different view that is only for people who have done the 1000 step.
When I was dealing with this project, I understand that even for a project with a huge space like this, I can still manage to find a way to design. I cut the spaces into small pieces with the client’s requirements in my mind. Then I suppose things wouldn’t be so hard after all.
Q: Could you please tell us your expectations for the future?
A: I hope that every design that I do can be “people-oriented”. I want to make my design come from life but larger than life. If I can leave a meaningful mark on this vast world through interior design, that would be enough for me.
