Suran Design

In 2017, designer Zhang Yukun returned from Shenzhen to his hometown Nanchang to start a business with his insistence of "design is valuable and worth paying for", and got the support of his friend and an old client Xie Xin.

Zhang Yukun named the design brand "Suran" with two meanings. One is from the client's point of view, he was hoping that the team could bring each client the relaxing feeling of "living in a natural space". Another is from the designer himself, he hoped that every member of the team could "choose one thing worth pursuing, then work hard on it", and keep their passion and love for the design industry.

When undertaking a project, the Suran Design team has its own set of rules. Zhang Yukun wanted to challenge the old standards of the decoration industry, bringing new professional value to design. They don’t want to make design accessorial to decoration construction.

With the team working with a clear division of labor, the Suran Design team has come up with a standardized process for design and decoration. They now make the decoration process controllable. Such an efficient system can make the designers focus more on connecting creativity to landing the design.

Suran Design got to know BuildMost at the end of 2022. The brand manager, Xie Xin has experience in the trade business for export and she would really like to bring China’s good things to a bigger audience. Breaking certain stereotypes would be the goal. After working in the design industry for a while, she also wanted to bring China’s good designs abroad. That is why she and her Suran Design joined BuildMost.

Renovating an Old Duplex

When undertaking a home improvement project, the Suran Design Team will collect information about the habits of the people that use the space, and their special needs to make an optimization plan for better traffic flow. The Suran Design team once took over a renovation project of an old duplex house. The second floor of the duplex has an irregular dome and special-shaped structures, the rate of space utilization is very low even when the whole house is just 200 square meters large. To design a house that could accommodate 6 people of 3 separate generations, the team was facing a huge problem.

Thanks to its whole-house customization service, the Suran Design team has more flexibility when handling renovation and remodeling. Finishing, soft decoration, lighting fixtures design, and construction are all under the full control of the Suran Design team. The Suran Design finally land the project successfully.

It All Comes Down to Sincerity

Xie Xin, the brand manager of Suran Design, believes that there are no shortcuts in communicating with clients. It all comes down to sincerity. Sincerity, respect, equality, and truthfulness will do it. Just treat your clients like family members.

Zhang Yukun, the founder and brand owner of Suran Design, also shared another story with us: "About ten years ago, I took on a project in Nanchang. Back in that time, people are not accustomed to paying for design. The client's family was not very well-off, but the client was still willing to pay a lot of design fees.” After the details of the project were negotiated and confirmed, the client’s father paid the design fee in cash, with trusting eyes. “The cash was collected tidily. I was stunned by that and I told myself I would live up to their trust.”

After the landing of the design, the client and his family were very satisfied. They felt that the design fee was well spent. It was that experience that finally convinces Zhang Yukun that he would return to Nanchang from Shenzhen to start a business to bring excellent designs and first-tier services of big cities back to his hometown.

Suran Design has already joined BuildMost and started exploring global design opportunities. Zhang Yukun told us that they have done several off-site projects and summed up all these experiences. They now have a procedure to handle off-site projects, making at least 95% restoration of their original design. They also look forward to more offsite, even foreign projects.
